tradition

Villa Massa interprets the uniqueness and tradition of the area through its products in the heart of the Sorrentine peninsula. An ideal place to breathe an ancient and suggestive atmosphere, here can be found, in a fascinating mixture, historical corners, spectacular natural features and a cobalt sea.

In this wonderful natural setting, from very ancient times the guest of honour has been the lemon, whose cultivation is so tightly bound up with this environment that it has been given the name of the Sorrentine Oval.

This variety of lemon, fruit of the labour of the local farmers, with a colour and taste all its own, has from time immemorial been a kind of symbol of the Sorrentine peninsula; apart from being a characteristic feature of the local landscape, it has always maintained a strong local culinary presence.

To defend the uniqueness of the "Sorrentine Oval" and other citrus fruits typical of the Sorrentine peninsula, the Solagri Cooperative was formed, which now includes more than 240 agricultural companies. The first of many objectives reached was the recognition of the Sorrentine Lemon by the European Community as a Protected Geographic Location product. Thanks to the consultancy of qualified agronomists the activity of the agricultural companies is carried out with full respect to local traditions with an eye to the most advanced biological cultivation and anti-pathogenic organism techniques.

In particular the characteristic structure of the high pergolas ("a pagliarelle"), necessary to protect the trees in the coldest months, the traditional way of working the land by creating pools of rainwater around the bases of the plants, and the exclusive use of natural fertilizers, among which wild grass which is turned under during hoeing, guarantee the taste and uniqueness of the Sorrentine lemon. This highly-valued variety of lemon, like other citrus fruits of the Sorrentine peninsula, forms the raw material for all Villa Massa products.
