The tradition of Limoncello in Sorrento

Limoncello of Sorrento is one of the typical products of the enogastronomic culture of the Campania region. Tradition has it that, in the early twentieth century, the great families of Sorrento never failed to offer their distinguished guests a taste of Limoncello, the liqueur produced at home using the finest lemons from the family  lemon grove.

The Massa family was also one among  these and, today, the Villa Massa company, in the heart of the Sorrento peninsula, remains true to the best tradition of the Limoncello of Sorrento, thanks to the painstaking process that reflects the traditional family recipe and to the careful selection of the raw materials used.

The good fortune of the most famous Sorrento liqueur is, in fact, due to the basic characteristics of the ingredients used for the production of traditional Limoncello, the prized lemons of Sorrento. These lemons are a typical citrus variety grown only in these areas and that has remained unchanged over the centuries thanks to the Mediterranean climate of the Sorrento-Amalfi coast that favors the growth of a thick and fragrant lemon peel, rich in essential oils, which gives the Limoncello of Sorrento its unique flavor.

To preserve its authenticity, the Sorrento lemon (also called the Oval of Sorrento) has obtained the important European recognition of a product with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). This very prized variety of lemons is wisely used by Villa Massa for the production of its traditional Limoncello of Sorrento.
